Can cats see in the dark? What those eyes actually do

Cats do not see in the dark, they see in very little light, which is a different and more interesting skill. Here is what the eye actually does, what it gives up, and how to make a dark house easier.

It is nearly midnight, the room is lit only by a streetlamp through a gap in the curtains, and your cat crosses the floor without hesitating, steps over a bag you had forgotten was there, and lands on the windowsill in one movement. You would have found the bag with your shin. The obvious conclusion is that cats see in the dark. The accurate one is more interesting, and more useful when you are deciding whether to leave a light on.

The short version

What seeing in the dark actually means

The measurement that matters is the light threshold: the least light an animal needs before it can make out a scene. For cats, that threshold sits at something like one sixth of ours. Put a person and a cat in the same dim hallway and the cat is still working comfortably long after the person has started feeling for the wall.

That is a large advantage, but it is an advantage of degree, not of kind. A cat in a sealed room with no window, no gap under the door and no standby light on a television has nothing to work with at all. What it has instead is a very good memory of where the furniture is, whiskers that read air movement and surfaces within a few centimetres of the face, and hearing that locates a sound to within a few degrees. Owners read this as night vision because the result looks the same from the outside.

The hardware, part by part

Four features do most of the work, and they compound.

A large cornea and a wide pupil. Relative to the size of the eye, cats have an enormous cornea and a pupil that opens to a near circle. More aperture means more photons. It is the same principle as a fast camera lens, and it is why a cat's eyes look so different at night than in an afternoon sunbeam.

A rod-heavy retina. Photoreceptors come in two types: cones for colour and detail in bright light, rods for sensitivity in dim light. Cats carry a far higher proportion of rods than we do. The retina is tuned for detecting that something moved, rather than for describing exactly what it was.

The tapetum lucidum. Behind the retina sits a reflective layer that bounces light that missed a photoreceptor on the way in back through for a second chance. It roughly doubles the useful light from a single pass, and it is the direct cause of eyeshine in photographs. It also slightly blurs the image, which is part of the trade.

Faster flicker response. Cats resolve rapid movement better than we do, which is why a laser dot or a twitching toy is so compelling, and why some cats appear to watch something on a wall that is not there. They are reading movement at a rate our own eyes smooth over.

The cat did not get better eyes than ours. It got different eyes, optimised for a different shift.

Two entries there explain a lot of daily cat behaviour. The poor near focus is why a treat dropped directly under a cat's nose gets sniffed rather than seen, and why a cat will pat at your hand to find something it is looking straight at. The colour range is why a bright red toy is not visually exciting to a cat, whatever it does for the person buying it. Blue and yellow toys, and above all moving ones, land better.

Dusk is the design brief

Cats are crepuscular, most active in the half light around dawn and dusk. That is not a quirk of domestic life, it is when the small mammals they evolved to hunt are moving. Everything above is optimised for those two windows: enough light to use, plenty of movement to detect, and no need for the fine detail that daylight vision spends its resources on.

It is operating at peak capability at the hour its ancestors worked, in a house where the prey has been replaced by a bottle cap. When the room really is dark

Take the light away entirely and the cat switches systems. Whiskers, including the short ones above the eyes and on the backs of the front legs, read surfaces and air currents at close range. Hearing takes over for distance. And a cat that has lived in a room for a month is working from a map it built in daylight, which is why rearranging furniture unsettles a cat more than you would expect, and why a blind cat can move around a familiar home with unnerving confidence.

It is also why the cat that thunders about at night will occasionally knock something over. Motion detection with no light to feed it, plus a coffee table that moved yesterday, equals one broken mug.

Five changes that make a dark house easier

  1. 1Put one low light on the night route. Bed to litter tray to water, no brighter than a nightlight. This matters most for seniors and for cats in a new home.
  2. 2Light the stairs. Depth judgement needs detail, which is the thing cats have least of. A single low light at the top or bottom removes the only genuinely risky spot.
  3. 3Keep the layout stable. The map in your cat's head is the main navigation system after dark. Move the tray and the water bowl as rarely as you can.
  4. 4Do not leave a bright light on all night. Cats sleep better in a dark room, and a blazing lamp helps you more than it helps them.
  5. 5Play in the evening, not at 2am. A proper hunting session before bed does more for night-time peace than any lighting change.

Verdict by household

Flats and small homes. Almost nothing needed. Ambient street light through a window is generous by cat standards.

Houses with stairs. Worth one small light near the stairs, especially with a cat over ten.

Homes with a senior cat. The most valuable change of the five. Ageing lenses and stiffer pupils mean the same room is dimmer than it used to be, and a stiff, older cat has less margin for a misjudged step. Our senior signals piece covers the wider picture.

When eyes need a vet, not a nightlight

Most night-time clumsiness is furniture, not eyesight. These are the signs that it is the eye:

  • Bumping into things in normal daylight, or feeling along walls.
  • Pupils that stay wide open in a bright room, or one pupil larger than the other.
  • Cloudiness, colour change in the iris, or a blue or grey haze over the eye.
  • Sudden onset clumsiness, disorientation or reluctance to jump.
  • Squinting, discharge, pawing at an eye or holding an eye closed.

Sudden vision loss in cats is often a symptom of something systemic, most commonly high blood pressure linked to kidney disease or an overactive thyroid. That makes it urgent rather than merely interesting, and it can sometimes be partly reversed if it is caught quickly. Any of the signs above deserves a phone call the same day.
